Run Champion, Perth
Shona is 44 and volunteers in Perth on a Wednesday evening, encouraging, providing advice and holding bags! She has been a geologist for 20 years and a runner for 10. She started running when she moved to Perth as it was a great way to keep fit, get outdoors, and meet people, and because it wasn’t a team thing or gym thing she could go whenever she had time, not when it fit into others’ schedules. Running very quickly became therapy for Shona. It’s time she gets to be alone without phones, computers, or other people. She uses running to clear her head and relax. The longer she runs, the more like meditation it gets. She also found that other runners were very supportive of each other. There’s no judging or comparing, just encouragement, assistance, and help.
It was this that Shona had in mind when she joined On My Feet. Shona believes that exercise makes us better people, both to ourselves and others, and that everyone gets something out of it no matter how much it hurts. Shona has run marathons, and over mountains, and she has met inspiring people who amaze her and make her question her own self-imposed limits.
“I’ve got more from running than most things in my life and I want to encourage others who want to explore that too. It shouldn’t matter who you are, the simplest form of exercise is walking or running and it is available to all. (Oh and the other thing running does for me is allow me to eat a few more indulgent cake calories and wine calories that my non-running self would get 🙂 )”
