Assistant Run Champion, Melbourne
Ray Barnard is 58 years old, he lives in Glenroy with his wife Susan. People who know Ray would describe him as kind and generous, upbeat and friendly. These traits are surprising when you consider that Ray has failed to distinguish himself in his career, in sport, the arts, or sciences. Considered by those close to him to be lazy and an avoider of chores, Ray could happily sit on the couch watching TV all weekend (often in his underpants and eating potato chips, the grease from which he wipes from his fingers onto his browny-grey singlet) while his wife does most of the heavy lifting around the home.
Ray is one of the very few people who one could truly say is totally without talent. He sings badly but frequently, he whistles much like a cow would if it tried, he cannot juggle and his attempts at yodelling can be described as “rural” at best. Ray has never had any degree of luck in Tattslotto, Keno or even local raffles and yet he continues to believe his luck will turn. For all this Ray has somehow managed to attract a large circle of loyal friends who support him, entertain him and keep him from stuffing things up for the rest of us.
Apart from being photographed in unusual places dressed in outlandish costumes and make up, Ray has few pleasures in life but one of them is travelling to the Fitzroy Gardens on Friday evenings to walk or run with the folks at On My Feet.
