Our Exercise Groups follow a similar concept to that of our walking groups, in that they aim to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of participants as well as providing an avenue to socialise with volunteers.
These sessions have a greater emphasis on improving the participant’s physical fitness. The sessions are generally a little longer and involve more intensive training. The focus at each session will vary between running (or longer distance walking), team and ball sports, yoga and other group exercises.
The volunteers and participants at each Exercise Group will dictate the focus of each week’s session.
Participants are offered opportunities to represent On My Feet at running and sport events should they commit to the group and represent the On My Feet values. On My Feet has been represented by Exercise Group participants at:
How do they work?
Each Exercise Group is unique and represents the training and development needs of its participants. Sessions are usually held near a homeless shelter or support centre, however can sometimes vary in location due to the nature of the training. For example, a group may have a special session organised at a local gym or indoor facility.
Sessions are typically held once a week, with participants encouraged to also train in their personal time outside of the group. Volunteers can create training programs for participants to take away with them to achieve their fitness goals. Some exercise groups may have multiple sessions a week, however this is dependent on the needs of participants.
At the end of every month, each Exercise Group will hold a team dinner at a local eatery. These meals help galvanise the group and foster a tribe culture – which is key for the ongoing involvement of both volunteers and participants.
I’ve always had trouble with mental health, depression and anxiety, so someone asked me to come along on a trail run – it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was also really beautiful. I was hooked straight away…and I really started to see the benefits to my mental health.
